Exploring the wonderful world of nature with Westerham Day Nursery and Pre-school forest school

Our Forest School runs all year round, come rain or shine, and is an exciting and different way for to learn. Led by a team of qualified Forest School Practitioners, Forest School is a fantastic opportunity  to develop children's understanding and appreciation of the natural environment and the beauty of nature.

The children thrive in Forest School, developing fine and gross motor skills as well as new language and STEM learning through activities such as tool use and den building. It is also fantastic for well-being and we see first-hand the pleasure children gain from playing outdoors and interacting with the natural world; from the first butterflies of the year to the leaves falling in Autumn there is always something to see and do.

Our children gain so much from exploring the wonderful world of nature

Situated in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we are lucky to have access to a number of woodland areas in the school grounds. These areas are cared for by our Forest School Leader and all children access the woodlands in a way that is appropriate for them. It is our belief that with regular and guided interaction with the woods, all children will feel improved physical and emotional wellbeing through adventure, freedom and play.

All Caterpillar and Butterfly Children take part in regular Forest School sessions with our Level 3 Forest School Leader who also holds Qualified Teacher Status. The Forest School areas includes bug hotels, mud kitchens, dens, ladders, swings, hammocks and a climbing frame. We also have a log circle for firepits, snacks and story time.

Our Forest School

we follow the forest school association's
six principles of good practice

  1. Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.

  2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world

  3. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

  4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

  5. Forest School is run by qualified Practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional Practice.

  6. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.

forest school activities

During Forest School sessions, children will learn to safely use tools such as palm drills, hammers, peelers and bow saws.

They will be supported to go on minibeast safaris and learn about the wildlife which we share the woods with; they will practice maths and science to identify what they find. They will learn about native species of trees and plants and be supported to harvest natural resources and craft responsibly. They will also be introduced to fire lighting with fire steels and be taught the importance of fire safety.

As well as these traditional Forest School elements, our sessions also support school-readiness through storytime, discussion and games. Children are also asked to practice good listening, resilience turn-taking and independence.
